Fruits as Medicine
The fruit worth reaching for, and why.
Fruit is not medicine, and treating it as such does it a disservice - it is better than that. It is the food most consistently associated with good health in the largest studies ever run, and it requires no belief system to work.
What fruit reliably supplies
Fibre, which slows sugar absorption and feeds gut bacteria. Potassium, which matters for blood pressure. Vitamin C, folate, and a wide range of plant compounds. Water. And sugar in a package the body handles far better than the same sugar in a glass.
Fruit worth knowing in India
Guava - far more vitamin C than orange, high in fibre, cheap for much of the year, and badly underrated. Amla - among the densest vitamin C sources anywhere. Papaya - vitamin A and digestive enzymes, and inexpensive. Banana - potassium and quick fuel. Citrus - vitamin C, and it dramatically improves iron absorption from a plant-based meal eaten alongside it.
Eat the fruit, not the juice. The fibre is the part that was doing the work.
Where honesty is required
No fruit cures cancer, dissolves stones, or reverses diabetes, and a great deal of what circulates on WhatsApp about specific fruits is invented. People with diabetes can and should eat fruit; the quantity and timing are worth settling with a doctor rather than guessing.
